The LEED® Green Building Rating System™ is a voluntary consensus-based national rating system for developing high performance sustainable buildings, that addresses all building types including new construction, commercial interiors, core & shell, operations & maintenance, homes, neighborhoods, and specific applications such as retail, multiple buildings/campuses, schools, healthcare, laboratories and lodging.

Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED®)
The LEED® Green Building Rating System™ is a certification rating, applicable to various dwellings. It encourages and accelerates acceptance of environmentally sustainable buildings and development practices through implementing universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.

The LEED® program provides a system in which a project earns points in multiple areas of environmental sustainability. It promotes a whole-building approach to environmental sustainability by recognizing performance by awarding credits from the following categories:

  • Energy & Atmosphere
  • Materials and Resources
  • Sustainable Sites
  • Water Efficiency
  • Indoor Environmental Quality
  • Regional Priority
  • Innovation in Design

Who uses LEED®?
Many individuals utilize LEED® as the nationally accepted benchmark for design, construction and operation of high performance sustainable buildings. Architects, real estate professionals, facility managers, engineers, interior designers, landscape architects, construction managers, lenders and government officials all use LEED® to help transform the built environment to sustainability. State and local governments across the country are adopting LEED® for public-owned and public-funded buildings.

Why Certify?
The LEED rating system is not only useful for building professions, but there are other reasons why LEED project certification can be an asset:

  • Be recognized for your commitment to environmental sustainability in your community, your company, your shareholders and your industry.
  • Received third party validation.
  • Qualify for a growing number of government incentives (state and local).

Project teams interested in obtaining certification must register with USGBC at www.leedbuilding.org.
